| The Heart Is Confusing Above All Things |

When I was 15 I bought my first perfume: a vial of The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things by Yosh (looking back, I realize the hilarity in the fact that my first purchase managed to be from one of the most pretentious and pricey noses in the biz). Being a perfume virgin, believing perfume was simply about smelling nice so boys would like you, I didn't buy it for the notes or the nose. I was, at the time, simply a kid lost in books, swept up (like many others) with the magical, enigmatic dupe that was JT LeRoy.
When I smell Deceitful now, my nose tells me: figs, cheap olive oil, simple vanilla. My heart? Illicit firsts: cigarettes, booze, boys; rainy Montreal nights; teenage melancholy, loneliness. In spite of the perfume being nothing special, to me it remains special. In spite of smelling to others like ashtrays and baby oil, to me it remains my ultimate comfort scent; warm and comforting, like being curled up next to a fireplace on a cold day. This perfume speaks to me and says things always get better, the way 15-year-old-me never thought they would.
I'm 18 - I'm by no means a perfume expert. I know my Guerlain from my Lutens, my Tauer from my JAR, but I'm still just an 18 year old girl. I have a lot to learn.
Still, when I'm 80 years old, have amassed an enormous collection, and I've smelled all there is to smell, I think my musty vanilla-olive-oil concoction will still mean more to me than all my disgustingly expensive Parfums MDCI combined.
The heart is confusing above all things.
